It’s no secret that here a tKTB we support going non-toxic when it comes to skincare and beauty, but we know it’s hard to part with our cult favorite products we’ve been using for years. New studies and amazing brands have made incredible strides in producing clean cosmetics that truly perform, and if you’re going to start somewhere, make it your mouth.
This may not be surprising to some, but it shocks us every time: routine lipstick wearers can consume up to four pounds of lipstick in their lifetime. Some statistics say nine pounds, but we think that says something about a niche demographic’s commitment to consistently pigmented pouts. However, the bottom line remains the same. If you’re putting on lipstick, some of it is going in your mouth and being processed the same way as everything else you eat, every time.
Your lips are also a thinner tissue than your skin, so some toxins are absorbed straight away. Common toxic substances that are rapidly absorbed are preservatives. Methylparaben comes to mind, which can be harmful to the endocrine system and is banned in Europe for its possible link to cancer. It’s also a “hidden ingredient,” meaning that it’s not always listed on the box.
Lead is another toxin found in many regular lipsticks, and is a harmful neurotoxin that builds up in the body over time. It’s not a helpful ingredient, but is a common contaminant that finds its way in when creating synthetic pigments. There’s literally no “safe” amount of lead one should consume, so shooting for none is your best bet.
Don’t be discouraged—clean products are here to the rosy rescue! There are so many clean beauty brands to choose from today, so luckily we’re not limited. However, it can be overwhelming to know where to start. Here is a breakdown of our faves.
Wild With Desire Lipstick
RMS Beauty’s products are known for their hero ingredient—a non-pore-clogging and super pure form of coconut oil that basically doubles as skincare. You’ll find it in almost every product, including their lipsticks. Any preservatives in these luscious pigments are derived from stable forms of vitamin E and other antimicrobial natural oils.

High Impact Lipstick
If the performance of your tried-and-true and ehem, less-than-clean lipsticks is your biggest woe, then try Ilia’s High Impact line. They are clean, opaque, and long-wearing without drying—in fact, they actually hydrate your lips to their full plum potential. Apricot oil and mango seed butter are chock-full of antioxidant vitamins E, A, and C for anti-aging and hydration as well as naturally preserving the product, and sunflower seed wax locks in said moisture as well as the color. Genius.

Phyto-Pigments Luminous Lip Crayon
Juice Beauty has a classic satin-finish lipstick, but we are very into their Phyto-Pigments Luminous Lip Crayon for its more matte finish and liner-like application process. Typically matte products are drying due to the alcohols and pigment components, but not in clean lippies like this one. They have a broad range of colors from nudes to bold fuchsias and deeper berries, with vitamins C and E holding down the fort to make the product last, naturally. Jojoba oil keeps lips soft, never feathery, despite the super easy crayon tip. Wear as a liner or fill-in—it’s a versatile must-have in your clean beauty bag.

Liquid Lipstick
The vegan matte lipstick by Honest Co. is seriously unbeatable. It’s truly a matte color, and in eight powerful shades that will compete with any of your favorite naughty lipsticks, and this one is sparkling clean. Thanks to hyaluronic acid and avocado oil, your lips won’t shrivel under the demands of a chic, long-wearing matte color. It’s flexible, too, so they won’t crack under pressure, or, say, salad dressing at lunch. It needs a little drying time—say five minutes—then feel free to sip your coffee without losing your color all over the rim.
